SPRINGFIELD, Mich. (WOOD) - Shawnee Fyke's first drunk driving conviction was in 1983. She lost her license over her bad driving habits, including additional DUIs in 1993.
In all she had six convictions for drunk driving and was sentenced to three-to-five years for a Charlevoix County drunk driving case.
But she kept drinking and driving, with the most recent episode happening very early Monday morning when she led Springfield police on a high speed chase that went through portions of two counties and covered about 25 miles.
"No treatment is really foolproof," said Donovan Royal, a psychologist with Oakridge Counseling Center in Battle Creek. He counsels people with alcohol addiction.
While curing the addiction is a good way to prevent drunk people from getting behind the wheel, it's not that simple.
"If a person does not have the desire to stop (drinking) for whatever reason, it's not going to happen," he told 24 Hour News 8.
