CALEDONIA, Mich. (WOOD) - A 23-year-old man died in a crash involving two vehicles Monday afternoon at 100th Street and M-37, police on scene told 24 Hour News 8.
Tyler Moederzoon, who was driving a Chevy Malibu, was pronounced dead on scene, in Kent County just outside Caledonia.
A northbound commercial truck on M-37 and an eastbound car on 100th collided before 3 p.m. where the roads intersect, according to Kent County sheriff's deputies. Investigators are receiving conflicting witness reports over who had the right of way.
One woman said the impact created a loud noise, similar to that of a train rolling through town. Both vehicles rolled after colliding.
Deputies are still working to learn what caused the crash.
Michigan State Police troopers arrived on scene around 4:30 p.m.
Officials said a lesson can be learned from the tragedy.
"Be alert when you're approaching intersections, whether or not the light is green or red," state police Trooper Mitch Dyer said. "In defensive driving, even though you're doing everything right, someone else may not be. There's a lot of distractions -- cell phones, radios, and those are all distractions in major crashes like this."
It didn't appear either of the drivers was distracted by a cell phone or anything like that at the time of the crash.
The driver of the truck was taken to Spectrum Butterworth, police said, with nonlife-threatening injuries.
24 Hour News 8 will have more information.
