GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Philadelphia has itscheesesteak. In the Windy City, you can get a Chicago dog. And in Grand Rapids you can get...
...a Grandwich.
Or soon, anyway.
A panel of local food experts and local celebrities will judge the entries into a summer-long competition to create a sandwich that will be synonymous with Grand Rapids.
The idea for the competition came from Nicole Infante, who presented it to the 5x5 panel in March. Though she didn't get the $5,000 seed money, she did get encouragement from different city organizations.
Beginning July 15, participating restaurants will present their Grandwich entry at their restaurant. Patrons can try as many as they want and vote for their favorite Grandwich through July 31 on downtowngr.org
The Top 10 Grandwiches will be announced on August 1, and public voting on those continues for five days.
The winner will be announced August 6 at Rosa Parks Circle. Everyone is welcome, but admission will be a donation to the Kids Food Basket .
Then you can bring your out-of-town friends to sample a signature Grand Rapids treat.
