GTV NEWS: PAROLEE TRIES TO GRAB COPS GUN...

Toby Farley
A parole absconder will face charges after running from police and attempting to grab an officer's gun.

Van Buren County sheriff's deputies were called to the 28000 block of County Road 687 in Bangor Township Thursday to help Children's Protective Services workers with a possible child neglect complaint. Before arriving, they learned that one of the residents of the house wasToby Farley, 34, who was wanted on an arrest warrant for absconding parole.

Upon deputies' arrival at the residence around 6:20 p.m., Farley ran into a swampy wooded area behind the home, authorities said. Deputies chased and caught him. He struggled as deputies tried to handcuff him.

While being taken to a police cruiser, deputies say,Farley tried to grab a deputy's handgun from the holster. Deputies quickly used defensive tactics to subdue Farley before he could free the weapon.
In the struggle, an deputy suffered minor injuries to a hand and did not seek medical treatment. Farley suffered minor facial injuries and refused treatment.

Farley was lodged in the Van Buren County Jail on charges of absconding parole, resisting arrest and attempting to disarm an police officer. Arraignment is scheduled for Friday in South Haven.

In 2006, according to the sheriff's office, Farley was convicted of disarming a Michigan State Police trooper. In that instance, Farley was shot by the trooper. Farley was paroled from prison on that charge and other charges a few months ago.
