Grand Rapids police say they received hundreds of complaints about the noise caused by fireworks use in the city Sunday -- but there's nothing they can do about it.
GRPD said it would like to remind residents that the use of fireworks is legal on the day before, day of, and day after a national holiday like Memorial Day.
That means GRPD can't do anything about noise complaints this Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.
The regulation was put in place last year, when Michigan approved the sale of more powerful types of consumer-grade fireworks.
But there has been talk of legislation that would make it legal to ban fireworks use between midnight and 8 a.m. on the three days they are currently allowed.
