Grand Rapids police officers arrested a man who allegedly pistol-whipped a teenager at an apartment home and then fled the scene Wednesday morning, investigators told 24 Hour News 8.
A neighbor told 24 Hour News 8 the incident began around 7 a.m. when the suspect came into an upstairs apartment occupied by the teen and his mother. The man confronted the teen and accused him of stealing his pickup truck, the neighbor said. The man then hit the teen with a gun, which fired a bullet that grazed the teen's face, the neighbor said. But police later confirmed the gun never fired.
The neighbor called called 911 and police arrived but the suspect had already fled the scene.
Police closed an area near the residence in the 1000 block of Ionia Avenue SW for more than an hour as they began their search for the suspect. Grand Rapids Public Schools had security officials in the area to help safely guide students to their school buses.
Officers then moved to an area near Division Avenue and Dickinson Street SW as they received word the suspect was possibly there. The suspect was taken into custody around 9 a.m., police confirmed for 24 Hour News 8.
