A woman is recovering from a gunshot wound after being shot in the arm while at a child's birthday party.
The woman was shot Saturday night just before 8 p.m. while attending the party at a home in the 71000 block of 62nd Street in Van Buren County's Hartford Township.
The woman was outside watching party goers hit a pinata when a can of pop she was about to drink exploded. She then realized that she had been shot. The round had gone through the pop can and into her arm.
"She asked me, 'Who shot me?' And I told her, 'I don't know.' So I got close and I checked and it was in the arm and I go, 'You guys need to take her to the hospital.' And I saw one of the pop cans. It had a hole in it," party hostess Noralba Morena told 24 Hour News 8.
The woman was treated and the hospital and is expected to be OK.
Investigators said the bullet was shot from over a mile away. They traced it to a location where several people had been target practicing, but the man they believe fired the shot had already left.
Officials tracked down the suspect in Berrien County and seized a high-powered rifle from him.
Investigators are now looking to see if the bullet removed from the woman's arm matches the riffle. They are also looking to see if the men were irresponsible when firing their weapons. The men say they were not, but could face charges if proven otherwise.
Moreno is just thankful things didn't turn out much worse.
"We're so lucky it didn't hit one of the kids," she said.
