A man was arrested after drugs were found in his car during a traffic stop. Police said he then tried to smuggle more drugs into the jail.
A deputy pulled over 22-year-old Terrance Mayes from Covert for a traffic violation in the 67000 block of 56th Avenue in Hartford Township around 2 p.m. Thursday.
According to a news release, Mayes was driving with a suspended license and had two outstanding warrants.
Deputies searched the vehicle and found a "user amount of marijuana."
After Mayes was lodged at the Van Buren County Jail, he was turned over to corrections officers.
A more thorough search was conducted on Mayes, and officers found a plastic baggie containing a large amount of individually knotted baggies with crack cocaine weighing about one half ounce.
The officers also seized $538.
Mayes faces charges of possession with intent to deliver cocaine, possession of marijuana, smuggling contraband into a corrections facility and driving with a suspended license.
The Van Buren County Uniform Response Division and the Van Buren County Narcotics Unit assisted with the arrest.
