Detroit's police chief says two officers investigating a homicide got in a shootout with a suspect, who fired them before they returned fire and killed him.

The officers were taken to Henry Ford Hospital, where one of them was in temporarily serious condition and the other was in stable condition.

Interim Chief Chester Logan told reporters Tuesday night that the confrontation started about 6:15 p.m. when the officers tried to stop a vehicle in which a suspect in a killing that happened last Thursday was riding.

Logan says the vehicle fled, and the officers chased it to a location on the city's west side.

Logan says the suspect fired at the officers before being fatally wounded.

Police withheld the names of the officers and suspect and declined further comment.
