One person involved in a northwest Grand Rapids standoff is dead and another is in police custody for an armed robbery.
The standoff happened at a residence in the area of Alpine Avenue and Myrtle Street NW as police were investigating a Jan. 14 armed robbery. Police made contact with the woman inside, but she refused to come out, according to a Monday evening release from Grand Rapids police.
Police entered the residence after obtaining a search warrant to find that the woman inside had taken her own life.
A 2-month-old baby was found in another room. That baby is safe and in the care of other family members.
A male suspect, who was in possession of stolen property, had already been taken into custody at the nearby 7-Eleven.
Family members told 24 Hour News 8 that the woman found dead was a 19-year-old mother and that she was not involved in the robbery. They said the man arrested -- her boyfriend -- was involved in that crime.
The man has a criminal past that includes home invasion and a felony weapons charge. He was lodged in the Kent County jail Monday pending felony stolen property charges right now, according to state records.
Monday evening, family members were still in the process of notifying loved ones about what happened. They say they have a lot of questions about what happened and why.
Police say this was a disappointing ending to the situation for them as well.
"It's very unfortunate. It's very tragic," said GRPD Capt. Dan Savage. "My heart goes out to the family."
Officers who first arrived at the residence thought they heard at least one shot fired and therefore used extra caution.
Grand Rapids police had roped off two blocks in the area and Alpine Avenue was shut down for a time.
