GTV NEWS: WEST NILE DISEASE IN KENT COUNTY
The Kent County Health Department has confirmed one case of West Nile virus and determined two other highly-probable cases.
The confirmed case involves a 68-year-old man.
The probable cases involving a 67-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman are waiting for follow-up tests to be completed for a final diagnosis.
All three victims required hospitalization and are recovering, according to a news release.
"We are very concerned about West Nile virus after a mild winter and hot summer," said Cathy Raevsky, the administrative health officer for the Kent County Health Department. "The disease can have severe complications in people over the age of 50 or in those who are already suffering from other medical conditions."
The first West Nile virus case in Michigan reported in 2012 involved a horse in Montcalm County.
Forty-three states have reported West Nile virus infections so far this year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
