A 39-year-old man is facing numerous charges after being caught with drugs during a traffic stop.
The charges include violation of the Controlled Substances Act, parole violation, resisting and obstructing a police officer, and driving while license suspended.
It was about 11:50 a.m. Wednesday when a Van Buren County sheriff's deputy pulled over the man for speeding on his motorcycle near County Road 358 and 39th Street in Paw Paw Township.
The rider from Dowagiac was traveling about 80 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone, according to a news release. The deputy then noticed the rider's bike had an expired license plate.
The rider told the deputy he did not have a driver's license.
The deputy then asked if he could pat down the rider, who agreed, and several grams of bath salts were located in a pocket of the rider's pants.
The rider said he thought it was still legal to have this item in his possession. But it is a two-year felony.
The rider then reached into his other pants pocket and pulled out a small tied-off bag and quickly put it in his mouth, police said.
During a brief struggle with the deputy, the suspect spit out the baggie, containing 1 gram of cocaine, to the ground.
The rider was on parole at the time of the traffic stop and had a suspended driver's license.
