GTV NEWS: Man kills girlfriend then self

house surrounded
Police say a man fatally shot his girlfriend on a Grand Rapids street and then killed himself in a nearby home Wednesday morning.
Both people have not been identified yet.
The woman was shot around 6 a.m. near Oakland Avenue and Laurel Street SW, police said. The suspect fled the scene and police were told he was holed up in a home in the 600 block of Oakland Avenue SW in Grand Rapids. Officers closed several blocks in the area and went door to door, warning residents of the situation.
The woman's mother told police two children -- 3 years old and 4 months old -- may also be inside the home. Officers arrived and set up a perimeter of the residence. They then obtained a search warrant.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Kevin Belk said they made numerous efforts, including the use of bullhorns, to communicate with the suspect but to no avail.
Officers then made entry into the home and got one of the children out safely. Officers re-entered the home and located the suspect locked in the basement.
Officers then got the other child out of the home safely.
The suspect was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said he died sometime between the original call about the woman's death and when they made entry into the home around 8:40 a.m.
A Grand Rapids Public Schools spokesman told 24 Hour News 8 they are closing the Southwest Community Campus School, which is located nearby, for the day due to this incident.
