The Kent County Medical Examiner's Office has determined that an inmate who died in jail on May 31 died as a result of a seizure, investigators said.
Deputies found Stephen Stiles unresponsive in his cell at the Kent County jail in the evening hours as they passed out medication to inmates.
Stiles family members, who told 24 Hour News 8 they were considering filing a lawsuit , were concerned that Stiles did not have access to his anti-seizure medication.
Toxicology reports dispute their suspicions, the medical examiner's report says, stating Stiles had a proper "therapeutic" level of Dilantin , an anti-seizure medication, in his system.
Alcohol withdrawal "most likely" caused Stiles' seizure, according to the medical examiner.
Seizure deaths are often the result of a sudden surge of adrenaline to the body, according to the medical examiner's office. In other instances patients have died from a lack of oxygen.
At the time of the incident, the Kent County Sheriff's Department said it was conducting an internal investigation into the incident. More information is expected to be released in the coming days
